A Cultural Feast Airs on Channel 21 on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2008

Hungry for something more than turkey this Thanksgiving? Watch some TV with real meat on its bones—The Creative Community Thanksgiving Day marathon.

For 24 hours, Channel 21 will serve viewers a delicious helping of select programs from The Creative Community archives. Host David Starkey interviews area residents who have made significant contributions to our arts scene. The list of guests consists of both famous names and other local talent, including Sue Grafton, Alexandra King, Bud Bottoms, Craig Smith, David Pu'u, Nir Kabaretti, Ray Cirerol, Bob Blackwell, B. Alan Wallace, Jane Heller, Josef Woodard, Jenna McCarthy Viviana Leija-Sysak, and Susette Naylor & Dennis Thompson.

Santa Barbara Channels Executive Director Hap Freund said, “We’re pleased to offer our viewers something unique to Santa Barbara, a tribute to those who help make this such an interesting and diverse community.”

To Finish up May of 2008 we welcomed County Arts Commission Visual Arts Coordinator Rita Ferri and “The Essential Worker” curator Brett Leigh Dicks on the first of two new Creative Community episodes on Channel 21. They shared samples from the exhibit of 10 regional photographers who captured images of laborers who keep us housed, safe, and fed. On the second new episode, playwright Barbara Lebow discussed her latest work Plumfield, Iraq, which deals with the costs of war and how it affects someone who survives it.

Guest to watch for in June include Artist/Mentor Rafael Perea de la Cabada and new Arts Fund Executive Director Nina Dunbar who talked about the “Teen Art Mentorship Show,” San ta Barbara Dance Alliance Executive Director Julie McLeod, and nationally renown poet Martin Espada who did a special reading this spring at SBCC. Plus, the Santa Cruz Island Poetry Special will begin airing.

"Spring" into The Creative Community for May

May 5-18: The first episode showcased the unique creations of glass artist Micah Lamar. On the second episode viewers were introduced to Larry Feinberg, the esteemed new Director of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

May 19-31:Join Steven Soria who creates dynamically interactive installations that incorporate stop motion animation, video, computer graphics, audio, and web technologies.

On the second episode Jo Anne Wasserman, Conductor and Artistic Director of the Santa Barbara Choral Society, joined Rodney Gustafson Artistic Director of State Street Ballet. The two are collaborating for the biggest cultural event of the spring. On May 31 and June 1 the two organizations will present Carl Orff's Carmina Burana at the Granada.

Celebrating National Poetry Month

On April 9, for the four year in a row, The Santa Barbara Channels celebrated National Poetry Month with a special LIVE edition of Channel 21’s national award-winning program, The Creative Community. Host David Starkey interviewed and listened to poems read by Santa Barbara’s Poet Laureate Perie Longo, Mayor Marty Blum, City Council members Das Williams and Grant House, and Miki Garcia, head of the Contemporary Arts Forum. The show will be rerun throughout the month of April.

On April 16 The Creative Community crew head out across the Channel to Santa Cruz Island with a group of local poets including Michelle Detorie, Gabriella Lindsey Klein, Susan Chiavelli, and Fran Davis. The group entered an elevated “island state of mind” with the lack of cell phone reception, traffic, and other modern day distractions. They read their own poems about previous island experiences and the natural world surrounding them. As soon as the program is edited it will be scheduled to air on Channel 21.

Creative Community Blog Back Online

Well, it's been a year since my last posting, but the CC Blog is now back online.

I won't attempt to name all the great guests we've had in the last twelve months, but I will mention a couple of higlights.

1) Not long after my last posting, The Creative Community Program featuring underwater filmmaker Mike DeGruy was chosen as the the "Best Entertainment Talk Show" program on local access television--for the entire country! You can see a clip of that show on Google video:

2) A year later, Creative Community was once again selected by the Hometown Access Awards, the consortium of American community and educational access television stations, as the best local acccess talk show in the country. The winning program this year was an interview with comedian/actor/poet Mary Rose Betten. The show featured clips of Mary Rose on The Mike Douglas Show, and she had the crew rolling with laughter in the studio.

In the interim, I've also been busy as a writer. I have three new collections of poetry. Adventures of the Minor Poet (2007)

and Ways of Being Dead: New and Selected Poems (2006)

are both published by Artamo Press, a local literary publisher.

Starkey's Book of States, a collaboration with my friend the artist Rafael Perea de la Cabada,

is published by Boson Books.

Some ups and downs on the show over the holidays, but by mid-January, we were back in business. Recent guests have included Cristina Venegas, Onja Brown-Lawson, Bob Potter, and Nancy Pearl, with new shows featuring Andrew Klavan and Glenna Luschei.

What a pleasure to have Nobel Laureate Walter Kohn on The Creative Community! Our conversation ranged from the Holocaust to Dr. Kohn's new film on solar energy, The Power of the Sun. The show was taped on December 7, 2005, and will air beginning in late December.

The Creative Community Keeps On Chuggin'

We've come quite a ways from our early "Studio B" set at The Channels, although even from the earliest shows we've had great guests like Jeff Arch (shown in this photo by Rad Schreiber), screenwriter of Sleepless in Seattle and other films.

As The Creative Community moves into 2006, we're looking to play an ever more central role in Santa Barbara's cultural life. If you have suggestions for guests you'd like to see on the program, please post a comment here!

Barry Spacks Art Show at Art Resources

Our next taping of The Creative Community "in the field" will take place this Saturday, Nov. 19, from 5-7 p.m., at Art Resources, 512 E. Haley Street, in Santa Barbara.

I'll be interviewing Barry, Santa Barbara's Poet Laureate, about his show of paintings and drawings, then a great group of poets will read poems inspired by Barry's show.

The event is free and all are welcome to attend.

Thanksgiving Special

Fans of The Creative Community will have a special treat this Thanksgiving, Nov. 24. Channel 21 will air all the episodes we've taped over the past year. As the promotional material states, this is "a cultural feast for Santa Barbara--television with some meat on its bones!"

The Fiddlers' Convention Show

My apologies to viewers hoping to watch the Fiddlers' Convention show on Monday, 11/14/05. Apparently there was a technical snafu and the DVD wasn't loaded into the on-air playlist. Channel 21 advises viewers to call the station if something like that should happen again.

In any case, the show, taped last month at Stowe House in Goleta, will definitely be airing on the following dates:

Sat. 11/19/05 3:00pm
Sun. 11/20/05 12:00pm

Luis Moreno

The show running right now (11/14/05) features Luis Moreno, an accomplished actor and former member of the world-renowned farmworkers theatre company, El Teatro Campesino (1973-90). Luis also plays guitar and sings; he has recorded a CD, Cerca del Mar with Mike Mullins (mandolin) and Barret Nelson (guitar). We had a bit of technical difficulty on the show's outro, but Luis is a great guest, definitely worth checking out!
